Thanks to Bonnie Morrow of Laureate Alpha for her wonderful report on Convention in Los Alamos this year. It sounds like it was a grand time!
Registration occurred at the Fuller Lodge. It is a wonderful historic lodge that housed some of the first workers at Los Alamos along with a school, cantina, cafeteria and so many others things. It was a hub of different activities and made from huge logs that the builder hand picked (and there were thousands of logs used to build it). The theme for that evening was 1940's attire and many of the girls came as factory workers. We enjoyed a barbecue that night and they had live music in the beautiful park across the street.
On Saturday morning we had the opening ritual, raffle sales and the guest speaker was unable to attend due to illness. She was a long time Beta Sigma Phi from Los Alamos and she became ill on Friday night. The Los Alamos girls did a really cute and funny forum relating to the 1940's and what was expected of women in those times. The forums had a lot of wonderful history of Los Alamos and it's beginnings. Lunch was served and then we were given a ration card and map to take around town to get stamped for a drawing on Sunday. The winner of the drawing got her money for convention back. It was fun and a good way to see the town. They had a wonderful trolley with a great driver. We could flag him down and he would take us where we wanted to go....free of charge. It was a good way to see things and learn a little more about the town. Everyone was so wonderful, helpful, and friendly. The Los Alamos gals did a great job!
Saturday night was a dinner and a wonderful band that played at the convention hotel (Best Western Hilltop House Hotel). The dress was glamour dress. So many ladies had wonderful dresses from the period...borrowed from friends and family. Others dressed the part in wonderful glamorous dresses and hats. Everyone seems to have a great time and the Los Alamos chapters where wonderful hostess. They made sure that one of them sat at the different tables and all of them were so willing to help at any time of the day....or night!
Sunday morning was "dress Sunday best". We had the awards, raffle drawings, passing of the torch and skits for 2010. Hobbs will host that and the big change is that it will take place September 24, 25, &26th. They are opening a new casino, hotels and race track and they want that available for us plus the facilities to have our convention in. Las Cruces wants to bid for 2011 and will do so next year.
I believe that the final attendance was 214. Los Alamos is a small town and they didn't have any really large place to have that many but they did a great job with what they had and I think that everyone enjoyed it. I know that I did!
