Founder’s Day
Why do we celebrate Founder’s Day?
In families, we celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and ‘special events’. In the workplace a Special Day is designated to honor employees for their ‘good works’, recognize advancements and achievements in professionalism. This day is usually celebrated at the same time each year. Therefore, it is only reasonable that we, Beta Sigma Phi members, have such a SPECIAL DAY that both celebrates the founding of our organization by Walter W. Ross on April 28, 1931 and those First Members and also celebrates the yearly honors and achievements of our currently active sisters.
Without the continued support and activity of our members, the organization would wither and die. Therefore, it is important that we honor our members with special rituals for those sisters who have achieved 15 years (180 active months) as Beta Sigma Phi’s with “The Order of the Yellow Rose”. Some have been continuous memberships others have done this in parts but what matters is the achievement of activity. We also recognize the longevity of membership although some years may not be as active participants. The “Silver Circle” is awarded to those members who first joined Beta Sigma Phi in 1984 and thus are recognized as a Sister for 25 years. International also has recognition ceremonies for each decade—30 years and 40 years. The “Golden Circle” is awarded to those members who joined Beta Sigma Phi in 1959 and thus have been Beta Sigma Phi sisters for 50 years. A couple of years ago, International announced the “Diamond Circle” ritual which signifies 60 years as a Beta Sigma Phi sister.
Exemplar chapter participation is recognized by the honor of “Woman of the Year” in each chapter. These sisters are announced at Founder’s Day and honored at the Honor’s Luncheon in the fall. Each year, the Executive Board and membership of Beta Sigma Phi recognizes a special sister who has been nominated by a member, chapter or a group of sisters. The nominations are sent to International or a special chosen group who determine the recipient of the City Council Woman of the Year. She too is ‘special guest’ at Honor’s Luncheon. In addition to these women, International or the Executive Board can honor a member or chapter for ‘above and beyond’ service to our Council and City.
The Legacy members selected at Honor’s Luncheon who will receive their ritual at the Mother/Daughter Legacy Tea in May are introduced to the membership.
Special time is given to the reading of the ‘Message from International’ in which we pledge to make the coming year bright and full of sisterhood and the special theme for next year is announced. Our City Sponsor for the year has an opportunity to speak on a topic of importance to her community activities. Our current President announces the Executive Board for the coming year and presents a recap of this year’s activities and achievements.
Lastly and best of all is a meal shared with our friends and sisters.
