Xi Alpha Omicron Helping Hands

Xi Alpha Omicron has been helping their sister Heather Borg through their chapter's Helping Hand Program since 2004.  Heather suffers from West Nile Virus.  Mary Stanton of Xi Alpha Omicron reports that several ABQ Beta Sigma Phi members have given Heather audio tapes over the years to help her with her memory.  Heather is very appreciative and wanted to thank all of you for your support.  Members of Xi Alpha Omicron also wanted to give their thanks.

Election of Chapter and City Council officers by Janice Swope

COMING IN MARCH—Election of Chapter officers

COMING IN APRIL—Election of City Council officers

Each chapter in Albuquerque City Council should hold an election for officers to lead for the 2009-2010 sorority year.  If your chapter is career status, then you have only one meeting in which to do the election.  It is extremely important that the In-Coming President and CC Representative elected be given to Peggy Jourden BEFORE the April 6^th City Council meeting.  These names are used for contact by the Nominating Committee which is chosen on the 6^th for City Council Officers of 2009-2010.  As you will recall, the April 6^th meeting is for IN-coming and OUT-going chapter officers/representatives.  After being in Beta Sigma Phi for more than 40 years, I have come to realize that when you are an officer of a chapter or in City Council, you are more energized to action than being a ‘chair sister’ going along for the ride.  We should all take a turn at each of the offices.  Maybe we could learn and be more forgiving of each others short comings.

Basic needed chapter officers are: President, Secretary and Treasurer.  To broaden the scope and increase the input for decisions, we add Vice-President (membership), Corresponding Secretary (communications) and City Council Representative and Alternate (to voice our opinions and concerns for the city-wide organization. 

The office of President has 2 very basic functions—planning for the new year --- presiding and directing the Chapter meetings leading the members to be the best that they can be and supportive to each other.

The office of Secretary is responsible for the reporting to International on the attendance at meetings, the minutes of the activities and any writing and replying to correspondence for the chapter.

The office of Treasurer is responsible for all financial activities of the chapter.  Chapter member dues, payment of expenditures made on behalf of the chapter, City Council dues and fees and any other obligations of the chapter.

To broaden the scope and increase the level of activity within a chapter or City Council, the office of Vice-President is official chapter hostess and is presiding officer in the absence of the President and is chairperson of the membership committee.

The office of Corresponding Secretary is to address all issues of in-coming and out-going correspondence for the chapter/City Council as directed by the Executive Board.

Consider being an officer-BE INVOLVED and enjoy your SISTERHOOD.

Never too late to pursue your dreams...

Anne-Marie Vidal of Xi Alpha Omicron Belly Dances!

 

 

 

Anne-Marie always wanted to belly dance and has been doing it for 2 1/2 years.   

 

 Her dream became a reality when she gave an acquaintance a compliment. While picking up some hearing aid batteries she told the office manager Danielle, “You look terrific! What have you been doing?”.  Danielle replied,  “ Belly Dancing, it  has strengthened my  legs and back."  Danielle pulled out a card for the Farfesha Studios and gave it to Anne-Marie. 

 

 Anne-Marie called the studio and spoke to Michelle Morrison, who turned out to be the studio director.   She asked Michelle if she was too old at the age of 52 to Belly Dance.  Michelle said no and not to worry about the age but come to the class. She did go to the class and loved it.  After 6 months of dancing,  Michelle told Anne-Marie she was ready to perform.

 

It took Anne-Marie two months to choreograph her fist solo.  She was excited and terrified at the same time and rehearsed it a hundred times.

Anne-Marie is now 55 years old and has performed many times.  She keeps up with women in their 20's, 30's and 40's, and she is thankful God allows her to dance.

 

Anne-Marie was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure and continues to dance which she will do until she absolutely cannot any more.

 

Belly Dancing is wonderful exercise and joyful. It is a good cardiovascular workout while being low impact. Many senior centers include classes in it.  It makes a woman feel good about herself.  George Bernard Shaw said, "If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, teach it to dance."
