WORKSHOP
When someone says they are going to a workshop, what comes to mind? What kind of Workshop could there be for Beta Sigma Phi—a social, cultural and service orientated organization?
Well, let me tell you!! When I first heard of a Beta Sigma Phi workshop, I too wanted to know more.
In the early years of Beta Sigma Phi the ‘sisters’ were mostly homemakers and this organization was a first step to community involvement which meant they were novices with little organizational office skills. What does a President, Vice-President etc. do? What are the Committees in chapter and City Council? How can successful rushing activities or progression in degree work be accomplished? These were the questions a properly organized and presented WORKSHOP could answer.
So the first workshops were to inform and encourage sisters to become Chapter and City Council Officers. After a few years and more of the ‘sisters’ were working in the community, the focus changed to include the various Committees of chapter and City Council activities. To be a successful Committee and Event Chairperson requires knowledge of the needs to get the job done efficiently and expediently. This too changed over time to include such things as crafts for fund raising, exercise activities—yoga, line dancing, etc.; community responsibilities—fire, police, health safety; food and fellowship; and more.
It is the responsibility of the Workshop Committee Chairperson and chapters assisting to set the format for presentation based upon the needs of Sisters and City Council. You, the membership should let the Committee and Executive Board know if there is a particular area of concern that we should address and include. We are an organization working for the betterment of self, family, friends and the community.
